International Residential Code 2024

The International Residential Code 2024 (IRC) sets the minimum rules for building one- and two-family homes and townhouses that are up to three stories tall. It covers all the main parts of building a home, like how it’s structured, how plumbing and heating systems work, electrical wiring, and gas lines. 

This new version has some big changes, including rules for energy storage systems, preparing homes for electric vehicles, and new standards for upstairs sleeping areas and using A2L refrigerants. There are also updates on how vapor barriers should be used and how to map hazards.

One big change in the 2024 edition is the new layout, which is easier to read and use. QR codes are added to the sides of the code to help people find changes and related information quickly on their phones. This updated, easy-to-use format helps builders, home inspectors, and designers find the latest building rules fast and make sure they follow the newest safety and efficiency rules. The International Residential Code 2024 keeps supporting safe, eco-friendly, and strong home building by having clear, enforceable, and up-to-date rules.
